Lady Troopers sweep Union

UNION The bad news for Mooreville fast-pitch opponents is they've got four more years to deal with Elizabeth Woolven.
Only an eighth grader, Woolven threw a one-hitter and followed it with a four-hitter as the Lady Troopers knocked off Union 8-2 and 4-1 Saturday at Laird Park in the Class 1A-2A state playoffs.
Mooreville, 28-5, advances to the 1A-2A North State championship series with Eupora next week. Union finishes its season with a 19-7 mark.
Woolven (14-4) allowed only five hits in 14 innings on the mound to go with 17 strikeouts and just three walks.
Union rallied from a 6-1 deficit to beat the Lady Troopers 12-8 Thursday at Mooreville.
In Saturday's opener, Mooreville got single runs in the first and second innings with Kelley Hankins getting an RBI single in the first and Candy Shumpert scoring on a wild pitch in the second.
Rachel Tally scored on an error in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.
Union got its first run in the bottom of the fourth as Morgan Breland walked and came home on a throwing error on Lauren White's fly fall to right field.
Union closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Loren Kennedy singled to right field for the Lady Jackets' only hit in the opener and scored on a two-out steal of home.
Mooreville removed any suspense with five runs on just one hit in the top of the seventh. Union committed two errors and issued three walks in the inning. Megan Webb added a two-run single.
Marley Smith (13-5) took the loss.
Webb, Shumpert, and Tally each had two singles for the Lady Troopers.
Lindsey Walker (5-2) gave the Lady Jackets a chance to win the second game, holding Mooreville to only one run through six innings.
Mooreville took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Woolven.
Union drew even in the bottom of the sixth as Kennedy drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Breland, and stole third, setting the stage for White's RBI double to left center.
Walker fell behind 3-0 on Tally to lead off the seventh, prompting Casey to bring in Smith. The senior righty threw ball four to Tally, hit Shumpert with a pitch, and threw late to third base on a fielder's choice by Melissa Turner to load the bases.
Tally scored when catcher Tiffany Thomas dropped a throw to the plate and Shumpert came home on a fielder's choice by Anna Woolven. Webb made it 4-1 when she raced home on a wild pitch.
Elizabeth Woolven then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh.
White had a single and a double for Union. Both teams had four hits.
Kennedy had a pair of running catches in center field to rob Hankins of extra-base hits.
