Lauderdale County's emergency management director moved closer Monday to naming a committee that will develop a comprehensive plan to deal with major, terrorist disasters.
Clarence Butler met for about 11⁄2 hours with representatives from emergency response agencies, local government, schools and utilities. Tim Miller, a Meridian Fire Department battalion chief, helped Butler.
Plans to respond to various disasters already exist within the Lauderdale County Planning Committee. Bulter's new committee will be asked to include response plans for weapons of mass destruction.
Miller said input also will be sought from law enforcement agencies, hospitals and other emergency responders so that potential problems could be identified.
Butch Shannon, safety director for Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center, said local hospitals have had concerns since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
