April 3, 2003
People of different racial and denominational backgrounds will gather Friday for the first annual Mayor's Leadership Prayer Breakfast.
The event is hosted by Mission Meridian, a chapter of Mission Mississippi, a reconciliation movement that encourages unity in the body of Christ across racial and denominational lines.
The breakfast will be from 6:45 a.m.-8:15 a.m. in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church of Meridian. The program will include prayer and music, followed by a welcome from Mayor John Robert Smith.
Charlotte Scott, director of the Mission Meridian chapter, said she hopes the event will become an annual tradition.
Guest speakers for the breakfast are Dolphus Weary, executive director of Mission Mississippi, and Lee Paris, chairman of the board of Mission Mississippi.
Weary was born and raised in Mississippi. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in 1973 and received his doctorate of ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson in May 1997.
Weary is the author of "I Ain't Comin' Back" and has written articles featured in many magazines, including Daily Guideposts, a devotional publication. He is a frequent speaker at local and national conferences. Weary and his wife, Rosie, have three children.
Paris is chairman of the board of Mission Mississippi. He is a native of Indianola and a graduate of The University of Mississippi School of Law.
He is president of Mississippi Properties Inc., a real estate syndication company with holdings in eight states, and president of Mississippi Building Co. and AmSouth Management Co.
Paris has given time and resources to Mission Mississippi the past nine years. Paris and his wife, Lisa, have three children. He is a deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson.
