West Lauderdale scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge Union 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Collinsville.
The game featured a pitcher's duel between West senior Trent Posey and Union senior Jody Blount.
Posey got the win, allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out 12. Only one of Union's runs was earned.
Blount (3-1) took the loss. He gave up only four hits, but walked four and hit two batters. Blount fanned four. Two of the walks and one of the hit batsmen eventually crossed the plate. Only one Knight run was earned.
Union took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jordan Robinson reached on a passed ball after striking out. Zach Robinson followed with a two-out hit to right field that went for a triple when Knight right fielder Cody Powell fell down.
The Yellowjackets made that run stand up through 4 1/2 innings.
West (11-5) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. C. Jay Fountain was hit by a pitch and Bo Davis reached on an error. After Blount got Randy Dively to hit into a comebacker for the second out, Posey ripped a pitch off the fence in right center to drive in two runs.
Union (14-6) pulled even in the top of the sixth and should have done more damage. Zach Robinson reached on a fielder's choice and scored from first on Wes Henry's double in the gap in left-center.
Sean Ferrell followed with a single to shallow center field, but pinch runner Maurice Thames was tagged out by Posey after stepping over the plate. Ferrell was then thrown out trying to take second base to end the inning with a 2-2 tie.
The Knights took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch hitter Dave Woods and Drew Snider drew consecutive walks to open the inning.
Powell followed with a single that scored Woods. Snider scored from second base when the ball got loose on the throw to the plate trying to get Woods.
We can play in them, it's time to start winning those things," Ward said.
Posey was the game's only multiple hitter as he went 2-for-2 with a double.
