Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Mardrecas L. Trotter, a 1997 graduate of Heidelberg High School, was recently selected as Bluejacket of the Quarter at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., and received a letter of commendation.
Trotter was chosen as the top performer and was cited for outstanding professional accomplishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing.
Navy Chief Petty Officer Latonya L. Turner granddaughter of Susie M. Young of Pennington, Ala. recently arrived off the coast of Kuwait in the North Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa, homeported in San Diego.
Turner is one of more than 4,000 Pacific Fleet sailors and Marines on a six month deployment aboard the ships of the Tarawa Amphibious Ready Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
During the deployment, Turner's ship has made a port visit in Singapore. The crew had the opportunity to shop, sightsee and enjoy the local culture and cuisine.
USS Tarawa supports amphibious operations using landing craft air cushions, or "LCACS", which are specially designed hovercraft that travel above land and sea surfaces and deliver vehicles and equipment. The ship also has conventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen.
Turner is a 1986 graduate of Lynwood High School of Los Angeles, N.Y. and joined the Navy in August 1988.
NEWTON Spc. Nick McWairter, Sgt. Larry Chapman, and Sgt. Sylvester Brookins have completed a training program on preventive maintenance of vehicles at the Army National Guard Training Site here.
They are member of the 1/204 Air Defense Artillery's Communication Section of the Headquarters Battery located in Newton. McWairter is from Collinsville, Chapman is from Newton and Brookins lives in Bentonia.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Milton L. Jimison, son of Milton L. Jimison of Lauderdale, is halfway through a scheduled six-month deployment while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Jimison is one of more than 8,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines on a six month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while aboard the ships and squadrons of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Battle Group.
Jimison is a 1991 graduate of Kemper County High School and is from DeKalb and joined the U.S. Navy in July 1991.
