City Bowling tournaments come to an end for 2003

The 2003 Men's and Ladies' City Tournaments are now in the books. Unofficial final standings are posted at Dixie Bowl for both tournaments.
Prize lists and official standings should be available soon. Everyone should be sure to thank Lisa Barfield and Jason Pierce, directors for the men's tournament for two exciting weekends of competition. This was the first experience any of them have had in conducting a major tournament and they all did an excellent job of wading through the chaos to produce two outstanding events.
The final weekend produced no perfect games, but Arthur Dearman managed to thrill the crowd with a career best 288 game on Saturday.
The bowling ball given away by Dixie Bowl went to Andrew Clayton, Stephen Walker, Shelia Dearman and Teresa Nance. Congratulations to them and all the tournament winners.
Next on the agenda is the 40th Annual YABA City Tournament which is slated for March 29-30 at Dixie Bowl. Singles and Doubles will bowl Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Team Event will take place Sunday at 1:30 p.m. If your child plans to take part, entries should be turned in to YABA Secretary Leon Fike by March 22.
In local league action last week, Janie Tisdale took star billing when she put together games of 269 and 247 while on her way to posting a 704 series in the Monday Nighters league. Though not the first 700 of her career, she did roll the first "7" of the 2002-2003 season for the ladies.
Shelia Dearman also got her name in lights by pounding out a 225/604 in the Dixie Belle league and then drilled a nice 279/621 the next night in the Ball &Chain league.
Other ladies strutting their stuff included Nita Fike (225, 233), Eunice Dillard (220), Debbie Jones (220) and Lainey Rogers (606).
As for the guys, Greg Taylor would like to have the middle game back after he started off action in the Ball &Chain league with an exciting ten-in-a-row 289 and ended the night with a 279 to finish with a career high 734.
Andrew Clayton continued to show why he is one of our area's top bowlers with a 278, a 206 and a 269 for a 753 to lead the pack. Barry Woods, who went nearly the entire first half of the season without a "7", recorded his fourth such series since then with a 700 on the nose.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Dixie Bowl manager M.A. Copeland who is recovering from surgery last week. As this is being written, all is well and he is recuperating at home. We hope to see him back in action soon.
Also, welcome back to Jim Broderick, Jr. who has recovered from knee surgery and made his return to the lanes.
