Saving Kmart

By Staff
Jan. 26, 2003
If petitioners have their way, hundreds of local Big K/Kmart shoppers will have a voice in whether the Meridian store closes. It's on the bankrupt retailer's hit list, but it remains to be seen whether the desires of local shoppers can influence a final decision. Hopefully, a show of support will be helpful in convincing the company it has loyal customers here.
In a struggling city whose economy is built on the shaky fortunes of retail, it makes good sense to send a positive message to Kmart's corporate decision-makers and the bankruptcy court that will have a major influence over which stores close and which remain open. The Meridian store reportedly has always done well financially, even as the company itself was collapsing.
Kmart is a popular shopping option for many, many people and the loss of the sales taxes their shopping produces would be a huge blow. We encourage Kmart's corporate powers to reexamine their hit list and keep the Meridian store open for business.
