A former women's collegiate basketball coach has taken on coaching duties at Lamar School.
Tori Johnson, a former player at the University of West Alabama, will direct the Lady Raiders softball program and be an assistant to head girls basketball coach Doc Stephens. Johnson started her new position last week.
Johnson comes to Lamar after spending a season as the head women's' basketball coach at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. Huntingdon plays on the Division II-level in NAIA, but did not offer athletic grants in aid.
From there, she was a guard for four seasons for the Lady Tigers basketball program at West Alabama. Following her playing career, Johnson spent a season as a graduate assistant coach at UWA.
She then landed the Huntingdon post.
At Lamar, Johnson will lend a hand to Stephens in trying to turn around the Lady Raiders basketball program. She will also teach health and physical education.
Then in the spring, she will begin her first season as the Lady Raiders slow-pitch head coach.
She said the Lady Raiders will begin practice at the conclusion of the basketball season. The softball season will begin in the third or fourth week in February.
