Excellence in Education

The five recipients of the 2002-2003 Dorothy McCauley Bates Memorial Scholarships for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College are: Matt Harrison, Jessica Graham, Elizabeth Compton, Chris Michael Clark and Stephen Joseph Johnson.
George Wade Bates of Birmingham established the endowment in memory of his former wife. The Bates met while attending Meridian Community College in 1947.
These $1,000 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation.
Harrison, West Lauderdale High School graduate, is a freshman majoring in accounting. He works part time at Winn-Dixie. After graduating from MCC, Harrison plans to attend Mississippi State University.
Graham, a Meridian High School graduate, is a freshman majoring in accounting. Graham is employed part time at Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse.
Compton, a Meridian High graduate, is in the University Transfer Program. She is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honorary society for two-year college students.
She is employed part time at an accounting firm.
Clark, a Meridian High graduate, was a member of the Phi Kappa social service fraternity. He is a freshman at MCC studying business and industry. He works part time at K &S Custom Warehousing.
Johnson, a Meridian High graduate, is a freshman majoring in business. He is a member of the MCC Chorus, the Variations and the Baptist Student Union.
Johnson was awarded the 2002 Skewes Award and the 2002 Excellence in Journalism Award. He is a member of the First Baptist Church Youth Group and choir. He aspires to work with the Peace Corps after he completes his education.
Julia Kirsten Patton has been selected to receive the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Scholarship for the spring semester at Meridian Community College.
The $100 scholarship is funded by the association through the MCC Foundation.
Patton, a Quitman High School graduate, is a sophomore in the Associate Degree Nursing Program. She is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses.
Patton was named to the National Dean's List 2001-2002. Her career plans include pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Afton Elizabeth Green, Corey R. Fontan and Clinton Hales are the 2002-2003 Austin and Alice James Accounting scholars for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College.
The $1,200 awards are funded from an MCC Foundation endowment established by Mr. and Mrs. James.
Green, a Brandon High School graduate, served three years as president of the Young Women's Organization earning the "Young Women's Recognition Award."
Green is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program with plans to obtain a degree in accounting. She is a dean's list scholar.
Fontan, a Meridian High School honors graduate, is a sophomore at MCC pursuing a degree in business management. His goal is to attend seminary and become a minister.
Fontan is a member of the Baptist Student Union and is the youth minister at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Fontan is also a dean's list student.
Hales, a Northeast Lauderdale High School graduate, is a sophomore at MCC. He is a dean's list scholar and a member of Phi Theta Kappa the international scholastic society for two-year college students.
He serves as a peer tutor and is a member of the MCC golf team. Hales is a member of Poplar Springs Drive Methodist Church.
Gregory L. Joiner of Collinsville was named to the dean's list at the University of Mobile for the fall 2002 semester.
In order to make the dean's list, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 semester hours.
