Lady Lions grab big win over Holmes

SCOOBA The Lady Lions came up with the big shots in the final minutes as East Mississippi Community College held off Holmes 66-63 in women's basketball action on Thursday night.
EMCC was unable to pull off the sweep as the Lions dropped to the Bulldogs 76-58 in men's action.
In the women's game, Katrina Barr and Starr Potts hit big three-pointers in the final minutes and Margaret McClure hit two free throws to secure the win for the Lady Lions.
The Lady Lions jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the first half and then went on a 6-0 run led by four points from Yolanda Thomas to take a 10-point lead.
The Lady Bulldogs slowly started to make a comeback and with 4:51 left to play a three-pointer by Lakendra Barksdale pulled them to within one points at 31-30.
Holmes went on to take the lead on a three-point play from Melissa Winters minutes later, but Barr scored with four seconds left in the half to give EMCC a 37-35 lead at the break.
Holmes came out in the second half and took a 45-41 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game. The Lady Lions refused to let the Lady Bulldogs slip away and finally were able to tie the game with 3:34 left on a three-pointer by Barr.
Thomas gave the Lady Lions the lead a minute later and then Potts came through with a big three-pointer with 2:20 remaining to stretch the lead to 64-59.
The Lady Bulldogs got a basket from Megan Colona with 1:25 left to play and then after a turnover got a basket from Winters to cut the lead down to 64-63.
The Lady Lions turned the ball over on their next possession, but the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score. Barr was fouled and injured in the final seconds and McClure stepped in and made two free throws. Holmes missed the desperation shot at the end and EMCC held on for the 66-63 victory.
Barr finished with 18 points to lead the Lady Lions. Thomas added 14 and Darnika Washington and Dorecious Powe each had 10. Latrice Rone led Holmes with 16 points and Winters added 15.

The Lions were held to 19 points in the first half and never recovered as the Bulldogs went on to a 76-58 victory.
The Lions led 13-12 with 13:11 left in the first half and trailed just 17-15 with 8:54 remaining in the first.
Holmes then started a big run to close out the half. The Bulldogs went on an 11-0 run to make the score 28-15 with 6:30 left to play. After a basket by the Lions, Holmes went on a 10-0 run to make the score 38-17.
The Bulldogs went on to lead the Lions 40-19 at halftime. The visitors were able to stretch the lead out to as many as 26 points in the second half, but the Lions continued to fight and cut the lead down to 19 points with 2:30 remaining.
The Lions were unable to make a comeback in the final minutes and Holmes held on for the 76-58 victory.
Jeremy Cable and Jermaine Willis led Holmes with 15 points each. Quentin Pryor added 13 in the victory.
Tremechie Evans led EMCC with 12 points while Joseph Collins added 11.
