PHILADELPHIA Many of the fans that attended Tuesday's Choctaw Central-Philadelphia basketball games probably expected a close contest. Just not in the girls' game. And with good reason.
For the first time since their first of three meetings in the 1993-94 season, the Lady Tornadoes came away with a win over the Lady Warriors posting a 68-63 victory.
Dominetrix Hunter led Philadelphia with a game-high 31 points. She was 11-of-14 at the free-throw line.
The last time the Lady Tornadoes defeated Choctaw Central was by a 46-38 margin in 1993. Along with an earlier 57-51 win over Neshoba Central this season, the Lady Tornadoes no longer have to accept second-rate status in Neshoba County girls' basketball.
The last time the Lady Tornadoes had beaten Neshoba Central was by a 60-43 margin in 1991.
Philadelphia (7-12 overall, 1-6 in Division 5-3A) also got 17 points from Shekara Young and six each from Johnson, Myia Henson, and Ashley Lowery.
Philadelphia led 19-17 after one quarter behind 10 points from Hunter only to have the Lady Warriors take a 38-35 lead into halftime. However, Choctaw Central's leading scorer Chantay Frazier picked up her third and fourth fouls in the closing seconds of the first half.
The Lady Tornadoes trailed 53-51 by the end of the third quarter, then scored eight of the first 10 points of the final period to go up 59-55. Young had two 3-pointers in the run.
A basket by Trish Phillips pulled the Lady Warriors to within 59-57 with 5:33 remaining, but Choctaw Central went scoreless over the next three minutes and 40 seconds until Frazier hit 2-of-3 free throws with 1:53 left. By then, Philadelphia led 64-59.
Despite making only four of their last 10 free throws, the Lady Tornadoes held on for the win as the Lady Warriors managed just two baskets over the final two minutes.
Frazier led Choctaw Central (20-3, 6-2) with 21 points. Willa Thomas had 12, Ashley Flint 11, Phillips 10, and Kelly McMillan seven.

The Warriors outscored the Tornadoes 39-27 over the middle periods to take the boys' game.
Philadelphia led 13-11 after one quarter, but the Warriors took a 34-31 lead into halftime and held a 50-40 advantage to start the final period.
Philadelphia rallied to within 56-53 on a 3-pointer by Bobby Goodin with 50 seconds left, but Beasley Willis hit a pair of free throws with 23 seconds showing to hold off the comeback bid.
Choctaw Central (17-5, 6-2) got 16 points from Deon Lewis, 13 from Shaun Dougherty, 10 from Clifton Willis, eight from Beasley Willis, seven from Roderick Anderson, and six from Jaric Anderson.
Philadelphia (10-9, 3-4) got 13 points from Richard Garrett, 12 each from Goodin and Eric Lyons, nine from Orie Hudson, and eight from Jonathan Davis.
