Trojans split with Mendenhall

Northeast Lauderdale and Mendenhall split a pair of district basketball games on Friday night as the Lady Trojans took a 72-49 win and the Tigers held off Northeast for a 75-67 victory.
In the girls' game, Shaquita Bell and Quin Jackson each scored 24 points to lead the Lady Trojans to the win. The Lady Trojans improve to 12-7 on the year and 2-0 in district play with the win.
In the boys' game, Joey Jackson scored 31 points to lead the No. 9 ranked Tigers past the Trojans. Northeast drops to 11-10 and 0-2 in district play on the season after the loss.
Northeast will host Bay Springs in Tuesday night basketball action.

The Trojans came at ninth-ranked Mendenhall with all they had, but in the end couldn't overcome Jackson and the Tigers.
The two teams battled to in the first quarter and Mendenhall led by just one point with four minutes left in the quarter. The Tigers went on a 9-4 run to close out the first quarter to take an 18-12 lead after one.
Northeast came back and tied the game two minutes into the second half. The teams traded baskets for much of the second quarter and Mendenhall led 34-31 at the break.
Northeast came out with a big run led by Marcus Betts in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Betts hit a three-pointer and then got a steal for a layup to cap off a 10-2 run that gave Northeast a 41-36 lead.
After a timeout, Mendenhall came out and picked its play up a notch. The Tigers gave Northeast trouble with a half-court trap and went on a big run to take a 57-49 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Mendenhall then went on a 7-2 run to start the fourth quarter to stretch the lead out to 13 points. Dekenno Winston hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as the Tigers were able to slip away with the 75-67 victory.
Emanuel Willis scored 16 points to go with Jackson's 31 while Arvell Keys added 14 points.
Winston led Northeast with 22 points while Betts finished with 17.

Bell and Jackson helped Northeast jump out to an early lead and, after the Lady Trojans overcame some pressure, they were able to take a big 72-49 district win over Mendenhall.
After falling behind 5-2, the Lady Trojans went on a 17-3 run to close out the first quarter and take a 19-8 lead. Bell and Jackson combined to score all but one point in the quarter for Northeast. Bell led the charge with 12 first-quarter points.
Northeast led by as much as 13 points in the second quarter, but midway through the half Satae Bridges scored 10-straight points to move the Lady Tigers to within four points at 27-23.
The Lady Trojans started to handle the ball better in the later stages of the second quarter and went on a 10-2 run to finish out the second and take a 37-25 lead into half.
Northeast went on a big run in the third quarter to stretch the lead out. This time it was Jackson that led the charge. She scored 12 points in the third quarter and Northeast closed out the quarter with a 13-2 run to take a 58-36 lead after three quarters.
The Lady Trojans stretched the lead to as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers cut the lead down some against subs and Northeast took the 72-49 victory.
Jackson and Bell led Northeast with 24 points each in the victory. Bridges led Mendenhall in the defeat with 14 points while Angelica Burgess added 10 and Samearah Johnson had 10.
