MONTGOMERY, Ala. True freshman Veronica Lee hit 8-of-14 shots en route to scoring 21 points, but it would not be enough as the Division I Lady Hornets of Alabama State upended West Alabama 81-59 in Friday evening women's basketball action.
The Tigers were held to 29.1 percent shooting from the field, but were able to force 31 ASU turnovers, as West Alabama cut the lead to as little as eight in the second half, but could get no closer. Margo Porter poured in 11 points off of the Tiger bench, while four-year Tiger CaMeshia Pete continued her solid play, scoring 10 points and grabbing a team leading eight rebounds.
Shameka Jackson exploded for Alabama State, connecting on 13-of-21 shots en route to scoring a game-high 30 points to go along with a game-high nine boards. Chrishutta Lewis contributed 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while teammate and former Livingston High School standout Shani Jones added 12 points.
The Tigers move to 4-3 (0-1 in GSC play) entering the holiday break. West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 28 when they face off with Harding in day one action of the MUW Christmas Classic. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
