East Central takes two from Holmes

DECATUR A pair of wins over the last two days has gotten the East Central Community College Warriors over .500. A 76-63 win over Holmes Tuesday night, along with an 82-69 victory over Itawamba on Monday, has the Warriors at 5-4 heading into Thanksgiving.
The Warriors led 17-5 nine minutes into the game, but Holmes, 6-3, went on a late 8-0 run to take a 32-30 lead into the break.
A 9-0 run put ECCC up 44-34 with 16:09 left. Freshman Desmond Jones had six points during that stretch. A layup by Demario Qualls gave the Warriors a 57-41 advantage with 10:13 remaining and defending MACJC state champion Holmes could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game. Corey Hornsby led the Warriors with 20 points. Donzel Crenshaw scored 15, Qualls had 13, Jones had 12, Brandon Mason scored nine, and Jamaal Martin added six.

The Lady Warriors have only two sophomores on their roster, but second-year player Tamekia Foley stepped up big in the closing minutes as ECCC improved to 6-3.
ECCC led 38-36 at halftime and by as many as 16 points in the second half before Holmes whittled its deficit to 60-57 with 2:20 remaining. Over the next 90 seconds, Foley made all four of her free throw attempts and had a pair of defensive rebounds as the Lady Warriors stretched back out to a 65-57 lead with only 50 seconds to go.
ECCC was clinging to a 23-21 lead before scoring the next 15 points to take a 38-26 lead into halftime.
Foley led ECCC with 19 points. Rita Birden scored 17, Kimyatta Viverette had 14, and Britney Burks had eight.

Itawamba 70
The Bobcats placed four players in double figures and had two more with nine points in beating defending Region 23 champion Itawamba.
Timothy Broomfield had 14 points and nine rebounds for JCJC. Lee Kirkpatrick had 14 points and six rebounds. Marvin McDonald had 12 points, John Gray had 11, and Marcus Johnson and Lafayette Nelson both had nine.

Jones was only down 46-38 at halftime, but the Lady Indians held a 45-24 advantage over the final 20 minutes to win going away.
ICC was hot from 3-point range, making 10-of-25 tries to hold a 30-3 scoring advantage over JCJC from long distance. The Lady Indians also had a 34-8 scoring advantage on points off turnovers.
ICC got 24 points and seven rebounds from Tiffany Garth.
, 13 points from Amanda Aron, 12 points from Natalie Reeder, and eight points from Shera Edwards.
Jones got 16 points and five steals from Latoria Keyes, 12 points from Sharon Pendarvis, 11 points from Colette Bartee, and four blocked shots from Falicia Jones.
