4-H day provides education and entertainment

There is always something fun happening in 4-H and this month is no exception. Sure we "4-H people" are busy, but we sure have a good time.
We recently joined the other 81 counties for 4-H Day at the state fair in Jackson. At 4-H Day, 4-H members from across the state participated in a variety of contests and events. One of the most popular events was the 4-H Fashion Revue. From Lauderdale County, Lydia Burns, Summer Lucky, Hannah Smith, and Lizzie Lucky participated. Lydia Burns was the sweepstakes winner in her category.
Lauderdale County is also home to some great speakers. Participating in the 4-H Public Speaking Contest were Laura Lucky, Hannah Smith, Lydia Burns and Summer Lucky. Laura Lucky placed first in the senior category and in the junior category, Lydia Burns placed third in the junior category. The judges really complimented our 4-H'ers on their speaking ability.
In the afternoon, the 4-H stage was alive with the sound of music. 4-H'ers were selected from audition tapes to entertain the audience as they visited the Trade Mart building. Our very own Lydia Burns was one of the acts selected to entertain.
In addition, 4-H'ers exhibited hand-made items in 4-H Village. These items were first entered in our very own Queen City Fair in September, then the blue ribbon winners advanced to the state fair.
We have another group of 4-H'ers who have been busy this month and that is our new Leadership Lauderdale Youth Participants. We kicked off this year's program with an overnight retreat at Roosevelt State Park.
This year's participants include Bess Barrett, Bradley Black, Jennifer Bristow, Jenna Cain, Allison Carroll, Ricky Clark, Abby Dennis, Jamie Easterwood, Andrew Gambrell, William Harper, Zandrea Harris, Danielle Harvey, Madalyn Ivy, Amanda Jones, Jeanine Kelley, Jessica Litton, Neville McFerrin, Shaw Moore, Brian Nanney, Jessica Pogue, Megan Waters, and Jessie Young.
Adults assisting with the retreat were Wayne Edwards, Leadership Lauderdale youth chairman; Anthony O'Neal; and Meagan Scott. Bill Crawford with the Montgomery Institute led the participants in the study of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and Patsy Douglas from the State 4-H Office led teamwork activities.
We had a great time strengthening our leadership skills and we are looking forward to a great year as we learn more about leadership and the community.
