Lamar Lady Raiders drop soccer match to Prep, 3-1

The Lady Raiders of Lamar School gave visiting Jackson Prep all it could handle in girls' soccer on Tuesday night, but in the end the Lady Patriots came away with a 3-1 victory.
Lamar led 1-0 early in the first half of the contest, but Prep came back to score two goals later in the first half to take the lead. The visitors scored a goal very late in the game to secure the victory.
Lamar scored first in the contest when Amy Swartzfager scored midway through the first half. The freshman striker put a couple of good moves on a pair of defenders to get into some space and finished the run with a beautiful left-footed shot into the right corner of the goal to make the score 1-0.
Jackson Prep came back to put a few good runs on goal together. Kate Carter found some space and got off a good shot, but Lamar keeper Cheryl Luquire was there to make the save.
Then, Lindsey Baronich fed Anna Steely with a great pass in the middle, but Steely's shot went off of the side post and the Lady Raiders were able to clear the ball out.
Prep finally tied the game up a few minutes later when Leslie Harrison made a great pass to Steely, who was able to put the ball away to make the score 1-1.
The Lady Patriots struck again minutes later to take their first lead of the game. Patricia Robbins broke free behind the defense and shot the ball into the upper part of the goal to make the score 2-1.
Lamar came out in the second half and continued to hang with the strong Jackson Prep team. The Lady Patriots did have some good opportunities, however.
Marjorie Salem made a nice pass to Carter to set up a scoring chance but Luquire charged the ball and made an incredible save to keep Lamar in the game.
Jackson Prep also had a free kick from just outside the box in the second half. Laurie Selman's shot was saved nicely by Luquire and cleared away.
The Lady Raiders had to push up to the offensive end to try to get the game-tying goal late in the game and Jackson Prep was able to get another goal.
Steely got the final touch on the ball after a scramble and made the score 3-1 to put Lamar away.
The Lady Raiders looked very solid on the day, but dropped to 4-2 on the season with the loss. They will be in action again when they travel to play Simpson Academy at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
