West Nile still a threat

We have said in this space before and we repeat today the West Nile virus is a serious threat to public health in our community. Three people in Mississippi have died of the mosquito-borne disease, for which there is no cure. A state of emergency has been declared by the governor and city and county officials are moving ahead with more spraying.
But, while helpful, spraying only kills mosquitoes that come into direct contact with the fog. The best defense is to eliminate the areas where mosquitoes breed, such as standing water in old tires and other places around your house or business.
People can and should do some things for themselves until this threat subsides. Here are some suggestions:
Limit outdoor activity after dark, and use insect repellents with 10 percent to 60 percent DEET when you must go outside. Remember, use DEET concentrations no higher than 10 percent for small children.
Avoid mosquito-infested areas.
Wear long sleeves and long pants outdoors.
Use window and door screens.
Remove standing water from your property.
Fix water leaks around your house.
These suggestions can be very helpful in protecting against the West Nile virus and will complement the efforts of local government.
