HEIDELBERG For the second week in a row the Raiders of Lamar traveled to play a team that had dominated them in the past and for the second straight week Lamar came away with a dramatic victory.
Drew Moffett connected with Blake Olmsted for a huge 95-yard touchdown pass with 4:52 left in the game and then the Raiders got the two-point conversion and held on for a 15-14 victory over Heidelberg Academy on Friday night.
The Raiders scored the first points in the game with 5:37 left in the first quarter to take an early lead. Heidelberg set up to punt the ball from its own 44 yard-line, but the snap from center went over the punter's head. The Raiders made the tackle on the punter and had great field position at the Rebel 35. Five plays later Monroe Mayfield plunged in from one yard out to put the Raiders on the board. The extra point by Tommy Edgerton gave Lamar a 7-0 lead.
A fumble by Lamar gave Heidelberg a good opportunity later in the quarter. Heidelberg moved the ball to the Lamar 31. On third down, the Rebels connected on a long play to put the ball in the endzone, but a holding call brought the play back. On the next play, Paul Mayfield came up with a big sack to stop the Rebel drive.
The Rebels moved to the Lamar 18-yard line in the second quarter after another Raider fumble, but Mayfield batted down a pass play on fourth down to get the ball back for Lamar.
Lamar threatened to score on its next possession and moved to the Rebel 24. Dylan Anderson broke around the outside to go the distance for the Raiders but a holding call brought the play back and stalled the Lamar drive.
The Rebels scored on their next possession. They took over on their own 28 yard-line and went on a 12-play drive to tie the game up. Brody Bustin scored from two yards out with 4:29 left in the second quarter. The extra point by Mason Key tied the game.
After Lamar turned the ball over on downs at the Rebel 35 in its first possession of the second half, Heidelberg put together a drive on its second possession. Jeremy Eason carried most of the load for the Rebels. He finished off the drive with a six-yard run with 11:18 left in the third.
The Rebels had other chances to score and moved as far as the Raider 26 but could not put more points on the board. Heidelberg continued to control the game and pinned the Raiders on their own 5 yard-line.
That's when the momentum of the game changed sides. Moffett connected with Olmsted on the 95-yard pass play to put the Raiders within one with 4:52 left in the game. Lamar acted like it would kick the extra point but quickly lined up with Moffett in the shotgun instead. Moffett took the snap and went around the right side and into the endzone to give Lamar a 15-14 lead.
Heidelberg didn't give up, however, and moved all the way to the Raider 10 yard-line. Mayfield ended the Rebel drive with an incredible diving interception on the Lamar 5 yard-line. The Raiders then caught another break when a fumble went out of bounds at the Lamar 10 yard-line.
The Rebels got one last chance when the Raiders had to punt with about 30 seconds left. Heidelberg took over at the Lamar 27, but an interception by Daniel Bennett sealed the 15-14 victory for the Raiders.
Lamar moves to 2-0 on the season with the win and will play its first home game against Jackson Prep next Friday. The Rebels drop to 1-1 on the season and will play at Central Academy next Friday.
