Meridian's Scaggs Field enjoys unique history

Scaggs Field is playing host to the Babe Ruth League 14-year old Southwest Regional, Aug. 2-7. The Meridian Community College facility has seen its share of good baseball in the past.
Built in 1978, Scaggs Field is the home of the Meridian Community College Eagles and has been the host site of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 23 Division I Tournament since 1986.
Since the State Games of Mississippi were organized in 1992, Scaggs has hosted the baseball portion of that event all 11 years.
College baseball has taken place here as well. Mississippi State played Livingston University when Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro were better known as "Thunder and Lightning." And the Livingston school has also taken on traditional Division II national power Delta State. Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi squared off here as well.
In addition, Scaggs Field has played host to numerous professional baseball tryouts through the years.
Terry Williams, director of the physical plant at MCC, knows as much about Scaggs Field as anybody, having been at MCC since the first Monday in June 1973.
The Tifway 419 Bermuda quickly took hold.
Former MCC coach Corky Palmer, now the head coach at USM, had the wooden fence added.
Williams knows the thrills this week's players will receive.
