Amnesty Day set for Saturday

Meridian residents can discard pesticide, paint, tires and other chemically harmful, hazardous waste on Saturday as part of "Amnesty Day."
Waste Management will collect hazardous materials from 8 a.m. to noon at Meridian's public works complex at 311 27th Ave.
The Meridian City Council voted unanimously earlier this month to pay Waste Management to accept the hazardous materials.
Jackson said the cost of the service will depend on the amount of waste collected. While most material will be accepted, Waste Management won't take explosive materials, radioactive materials, medical waste and freon.
Jackson said the waste collected Saturday will be shipped to disposal sites around Mississippi and Alabama.
Waste Management was contracted to handle the hazardous trash because a licensed handler was needed to collect it.
Amnesty Day is free and is only for city residents. Jackson said proof of city residency will be required before the hazardous trash will be collected.
