Six-player teams highlight tourney

An unusual six-man team tournament format hit the links at Briarwood Country Club on Saturday for the first round of the Buddy McGhee American Cancer Society Tournament.
Forty teams entered the field, giving what Briarwood CC pro Rob McGraw the club's biggest field of competitors.
That format led to some really low scores. The best belonged to a team comprised of Mac Barnes, Ray Long, Rodney Scarborough, Sammy Broadhead, Tom Adams and Trey Long. The group scored a 20-under 52 for the day.
The score was posted before the rains came in at 5 p.m.
Two teams did manage to finish their rounds firing 53s to sit a stroke back of the first-round leaders.
The team of Al Tynes, Benji Carpenter, Jason Anders, Kim Eubanks, Randy Warden and Shaun Eubanks had a 53. The team of Bobby Espey, Bobby Fleming, Joe Jackson, Johnny Boykin, Johnny Grace and Walter Hurst also had a 53.
Three teams were tied in third at 54. The team of George Follett, Mike Jones, Paul O'Leary, Phil Brooks, Sam Feltman and Terry Ellis had one of the 54s.
The team of Cathy McFerrin, D'Wayne May, Eric Hollingshead, Rex Gentry, Steve Robinson and Teresa May had a 54. The final team at 54 was made up of Bob Richmond, Dutch Short, Joe Mabry, Lamar McLelland, Lambert Irby and Robert Frazier.
Round two will begin this morning with the third and fourth flights teeing off around 8 a.m. The championship flight should get underway at 2 p.m.
Bryan, Morgan sharing lead
Doyle Bryan and Scott Morgan each fired first-day 68s to share the lead after the first 18 holes of the Northwood Men's Golf Association Club Championship played at Northwood Country Club on Saturday afternoon.
The final round is set for today.
The tournament is broken down into two flight. Flight 1 is for golfers under 50 and Flight 2 is for those 50 and over.
Judge Little is in third in Flight 1 with a 70, while Steve Stewart and Earl Aycock each had 72s, followed by David Russell, Dan Singley and David Ray with 73s.
Don Bounds leads Flight 2 with a 69, while Randy Pool and John Dement each carded 70s, followed by Kelly Swain with a 73 and Alan Hart with a 74.
