Newton humbles Hinds Lady Bulldogs

Newton's Lady Tigers devoured Hinds AHS 69-32 in the opening round of the Class 2A South State Tournament Monday night at Utica.
Newton placed four players in double figures in improving to 26-5. Lenora Gray and Twila Clayton both scored 14 points. Kotreece Bender and Marquita McLaurin both had 10.
Danielle Hilliard led HAHS with nine points.
Heidelberg 62
Forest girls 49
The Lady Oilers earned a berth in the Class 3A South State Final Four at West Lauderdale Friday night with the 13-point win at Heidelberg.
Heidelberg, 22-13, led 19-8 after one quarter and took a 32-14 lead into halftime. The Lady Oilers were up 50-28 to start the fourth quarter.
Catina Fowler led Heidelberg with 21 points. Princess Bender scored 16, Latoya Walker had 10, Shawana Stephens nine, and Jessica Yates six.
Forest, 16-13, got 23 points from Ebone'e Leverette and 14 from Sheena Evans.
Humphreys Academy 71
Central Academy girls 62
The Lady Vikings ended their season with an 18-20 record following their first-round loss to Humphreys Academy in the Academy Class A State Tournament at Marks.
Meagan Stokes led Central with 20 points. Carrie Coker tossed in 16, while Lindley Simpson scored nine.
Ashley Long led Humphreys with 18 points.
Wayne County 54
Hattiesburg girls 36
The Lady War Eagles continued their onslaught with the 18-point win at Waynesboro in the Class 5A South State Tournament.
Ratassia Worsham led Wayne County, 31-1, with 18 points. Natalie Jordan scored 13, Nicole Jordan 12, and Carla Bartee 10. Bartee also had 10 rebounds and five steals. Worsham had seven rebounds and six assists.
Hattiesburg ended Wayne County's season a year ago at this same stage.
Wayne County will host the Class 5A South State Final Four, Friday-Saturday. The Lady War Eagles will meet Gulfport in the first round.
Hattiesburg, 18-13, got nine points from Melinda Hartfield.
Noxubee County 80
Oxford girls 72
The Tigerettes got 22 points from Alexis Cooper and 21 from Jessica Mason in beating the Lady Chargers in the Class 4A North State opening-round game at Macon.
Oxford, 24-8, got 21 points from Paris Perry.
Bay Springs girls 52
North Forrest 51
Kristi Martin scored 19 points and Brittany Martin tossed in 12 to lead Bay Springs, 21-14, to the opening-round win in the Class 2A Tournament at Bay Springs.
Samantha Flennory led North Forrest with 28 points. Nicole Beckham tossed in 15.
