A Newton County legislator believes now is the time for the state to preserve and protect parts of the Chunky Creek and Chunky River.
State Sen. Terry Burton said Tuesday that a proposal he is sponsoring this year will do just that. The bill already cleared the Senate and heads to the House for consideration.
If passed by the House and signed by the governor, Burton's bill would make Chunky Creek and Chunky River eligible for the state Scenic Streams Stewardship Program.
The program encourages landowners along natural streams and rivers to create and participate in plans to conserve stream and bank habitats.
Program coordinator Andrew Whitehurst of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson said participation in the program is voluntary.
