Excellence in education

Charla Carey, a fourth-grader from Parkview Elementary School, has won the Character Education Logo Contest.
Carley designed her logo in Shelley McCraw's Explore Class at Parkview. Her design features the character traits for Meridian Public Schools in a rainbow with students underneath. Jeremy Shields of Silkworm Screen volunteered to take the idea and develop the logo for printing.
Charla won a dinner for two, donated by O'Charley's Restaurant and Lounge, and two tickets to Bonita Lakes Cinema.
OXFORD Richard French of Meridian was initiated into Kappa Alpha Order at the University of Mississippi.
A graduate of West Lauderdale High School, French is a sophomore at Ole Miss. He is the son of Belinda and Jim French.
Paul Gower of Meridian has received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy/West Point Prep School in Monmouth, N.J.
A senior at Clarkdale High School, Gower served as a page in the Mississippi Legislature in the State Senate last year and attended the 2000 Session of Mississippi Boy's State.
He is a member of the Lauderdale County Advisory Council, New Hope Youth Council and is a member of the New Hope Baptist Church Youth Group. He is also a participant in the Clarkdale High School Soccer and Golf teams.
Erica L. Huntley of Meridian, Daniel W. Watson of Toomsuba, Jeremy Jarvis of DeKalb and April Puckett of Porterville were named to the 2001 Mississippi All-State Academic Team.
The team recognizes academic achievement of students in technical, junior and community colleges throughout Mississippi. The students were honored on the Senate and House Floor of the State Capitol.
Jarvis served as keynote speaker with Gov. Ronnie Musgrove. He was selected Mississippi's 2001 Centennial Scholar. The Centennial Scholar is the highest scoring student from each state in the All-USA Academic Team Competition.
Huntley and Watson attend Meridian Community College. Jarvis and Puckett are students at East Mississippi Community College.
The members of the Mississippi All-State Academic Team will receive various scholarships to help further their education.
Keoshya Shenae Walker of Meridian was accepted to Johnson &Wales University. She will major in computers/business application.
Walker is the daughter of Jeanette Walker Bolden of Meridian.
HATTIESBURG Karen Napp and Emily Snowden, both of Meridian, were named to the President's List at William Carey College.
To be eligible for the President's List, a student must maintain a 4.0 grade point average.
Matthew Smith of Meridian was named to the Dean's List at William Carey College.
To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average.
St. Patrick School has been awarded a $750 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. The grant will be used to present Elliot Street, artist-in-residency Program during Spring 2001.
St. Patrick School was selected from 1,500 children's gardening programs nationwide to receive a 2001 Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association, based in South Burlington, Vt.
The award-winning gardening program will receive more than $750 worth of tools, seeds and useful garden products contributed by Ames True Temper and more than 20 leading companies in the lawn and garden industry
The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
JACKSON Jeffrey Douglas of Meridian was recently recognized for his service as a perspectives leader at Tap Day ceremonies held at Millsaps College.
Douglas, a senior majoring in biology, is a member of Kappa Alpha Order, Sigma Lamda and Beta Beta Beta biology honorary.
He is the son of Roscoe and Bobbie Douglas of Meridian.
OXFORD The following students were named to the University of Mississippi Chancellor's Honor Roll: Steve Eli Jellenc, Kimberly Renee Rusk, Regan Jill Aycock, Julia Tate Heblon, Meredith Ryan Long, Caroline Elizabeth Makey, Courtney Lynn Nicholson, James M. Paige, Martha Anne Parker, Mary Emmalee Parkes, Amy R. Roebuck, Melissa Ann Smith, Benjamin Wade Wilkerson and Katie Elizabeth Pigford, all of Meridian and Kristy Lou Brashier of Collinsville.
To be eligible for the Chancellor's Honor Roll a student must maintain a 3.75-4.0 grade point average.
The following students were named to the University of Mississippi Dean's Honor Roll: Jamie Leigh Kerley, Benjamin Jeffrey Moffett, John R. Rea, Paul Justice Bowles and Michael Gordon Mason, all of Meridian and Kelly Danielle Williams of Bailey.
To be eligible for the Dean's Honor Roll a student must maintain a 3.5-3.74 grade point average.
