SCHEDULE PREVIEW: Vina football prepares for 2020 contests

The Vina Red Devils will compete in Class 1A Region 8 this year. Last year the Red Devils went 3-8 with wins over Phillips, Cherokee and Shoals Christian. Vina made the playoffs after going 3-2 in the region but lost to Decatur Heritage in the first round.

AUG. 28 – AT MARION CO.

Vina opens the season in Guin against the Marion County Red Raiders. Vina is 3-11 overall against Marion County. The Red Devils lost to the Red Raiders last year 41-12.

SEPT. 4 – HOST SHOALS CHRISTIAN

The Red Devils will host the Shoals Christian Flame in their region opener. Vina won this game last year 44-12. The Red Devils are 4-14 historically against the Flame.

SEPT. 11 – HOST DECATUR HERITAGE

Decatur Heritage is one of the better teams to move into Vina’s region. Vina didn’t play the Eagles this past year, and the Red Devils are 0-5 in historical matchups.

SEPT. 18 – AT WATERLOO

Waterloo is one of the teams Vina has a fairly long history with. Vina is 27-17 against the Cougars, but the Red Devils have lost the past four in a row – including last year losing 48-0.

Vina’s longest winning streak against Waterloo came in the ’70s, when the Devils won six in a row.

SEPT. 25 – AT LYNN

Vina will take a break from region play and take on the Lynn Bears at the end of September. Vina is 7-17 against Lynn, and the Red Devils have lost the past nine meetings, dating back to 1991. These two teams last played each other in 2005.

OCT. 2 – HOST R.A. HUBBARD

Vina is 1-15 against R.A. Hubbard. The Red Devils most recent win against R.A. Hubbard came in the two teams’ last meeting in 2015, when Vina won 16-6.

Oct. 9 – HOST CHEROKEE

Vina is 7-12 against the Cherokee Indians. This past year Vina pummeled Cherokee 58-18. Prior to that meeting, Cherokee has won 11 in a row dating back to 1951.

OCT. 16 – AT HACKLEBURG

Hackleburg is Vina’s longestrunning series, with the two teams playing each other 67 times, dating back to 1930.

The Panthers have owned this series with a record of 9-55-3. The last time the Red Devils won was in 2001, giving Hackleburg a 17game win streak.

Hackleburg won 46-8 last year.

OCT. 23 – AT PHILLIPS

Vina and Phillips is another longrunning series, with the two teams usually in the same region. Phillips is 38-16 in the two teams’ historical matchups.

Vina won this game last year 8-7. It was the Red Devils’ first win since 2005, ending a 14-game win streak by the Bears.

OCT. 30 – HOST THARPTOWN

Vina closes out the season against Tharptown.

Vina holds an 8-5 record over the Wildcats dating back to the teams’ first meeting in 2006. Vina owned the series early, winning seven games in a row. Tharptown has dominated the back half of the county rivalry, winning five of the past six meetings.

Tharptown won last year’s contest 13-0.
