GREENEVILLE Heidelberg Academy's first appearance in the MPSA state basketball tournament didn't turn out the way the Rebels would have liked as they lost 38-31 to Lee (Ark.) Thursday night in a quarterfinal contest.
Heidelberg finished 26-7, a long way from a program that was 0-24 just three years ago.
Neither team shot well in the game. Heidelberg hit just two baskets in the first quarter, a three-pointer from Blake Bass and a deuce from Dusty Bass.
Yet the Rebels found themselves only down 6-5 heading into the second quarter.
The Cougars stretched out to a 14-7 lead, with 3:13 left in the first half, thanks to a 6-0 run. John Dilks had two baskets during the run.
Heidelberg finally overcame a scoring drought of just over three minutes when Lloyd Windham connected with 2:45 to go before intermission.
Lee led 14-12 at the break.
Blake Bass hit another trey to put the Rebels up 20-18 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Lee pulled even at 20 before taking the lead for good when Landon Bullard's three-pointer at the horn bounced high off the rim before dropping through the net.
Bullard opened the fourth quarter with another three-pointer to put the Cougars up 26-20.
Blake Bass led Heidelberg with eight points. Dusty Bass added six, while Windham and Dan Edwards both had five.
Dilks and Bullard both had 10 points for the Cougars. Higgins scored nine and Tyler Parten had six.
