Big run leads EMCC men to 87-79 win

SCOOBA The Lions of East Mississippi Community College used a big run in the first half to take a lead and hung on to gain an 87-79 victory over Northwest here on Monday night.
The Lions went on a 15-0 run in the first seven minutes of the game to build a lead and the visiting Rangers were never able to come back.
The Rangers jumped out to a 5-3 lead to start the game, but would not lead the rest of the game. EMCC went on the 15-0 run to make the score 18-5 with 13:20 left to play in the half.
The Lions were able to stretch the lead to as many as 15 points in the first half, but Northwest started to come back in the closing minutes.
The Rangers went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead down to seven points with 6:54 remaining in the half. After four points from EMCC, Northwest went on a 12-5 run to cut the lead down to four points with 3:12 left in the first half.
East Mississippi responded with a three-point play from Joseph Collins. The Lions also scored the final four points of the half to make the lead 51-41 at the break.
The Rangers slowly cut into the EMCC lead. Two baskets by Antonio Shaw cut the lead down to five points with 12:06 remaining. With 8:48 remaining, the Rangers hit four straight free throws to cut the lead down to 64-61.
The lead went back up to seven points after free throws form Reginal Roby and a basket by James Moore. The Lions were able to hold the lead around seven points for the rest of the second half and hit some free throws down the stretch to hold off the Rangers.
Tremechie Evans hit four free throws in the final two minutes of the game and Davarrius Hairston added in two to help hold the lead for East Mississippi.
The win moves the Lions to 4-16 on the season and drops the Rangers to 15-5.
Hairston and Evans each led EMCC with 16 points. Roby added 14 in the victory and Collins had 13.
Preston Dennis scored 18 points for Northwest in the losing effort while Reggie Gaddis scored 14. Antonio Shaw also added in 12.
Northwest women 72
East Mississippi 42
The Lady Lions had trouble scoring in the first half and it cost them down the stretch as they fell to Northwest 72-42 in women's basketball action on Monday night.
EMCC scored just 15 points in the first half and Northwest jumped out to a 36-15 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Lady Lions were able to cut the lead down to 18 points on a couple of occasions and knocked the lead down to 15 points on a three-pointer by Starr Potts with 3:50 left to play.
It was all Lady Rangers from there as they went on a 15-0 run to close out the game and take the 30-point victory.
Angela Tartt scored 18 points to lead Northwest. Cassandra Henry scored 14 and Angelica Graham had 13. Marquita Barksdale scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
Cedra Glover scored 15 points to lead the Lady Lions in the loss. EMCC drops to 8-13 after the loss while the Lady Rangers move to 10-9.
