Excellence in Education

Jacob M. "Mac" Lee and Matthew D. Shoemaker are the recipients of the 2002-2003 Robert E. Lewis Sr. Scholarship for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College.
Dr. Robert E. Lewis Jr. of Ridgeland established these awards as a memorial tribute to his father. The $500 scholarships are funded through the MCC Foundation.
Lee, a graduate of Northwest Rankin High School, is a sophomore at MCC.
He is a member of the MCC golf team and was a former member of the Midland College golf team. Lee is a dean's list scholar and plans to pursue a degree in marketing.
A freshman at MCC, Shoemaker is a graduate of Petal High School, where he was a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, Speech and Debate clubs, Drama Club and the school newspaper staff.
At MCC, he is a member of Health Occupation Students of America and the MCC golf team. Shoemaker is pursuing a degree in medicine and plans to attend Ole Miss after completing his studies at MCC.
Two freshman, Andrew Stribling and Jason Bryan Blanks, have been selected as the 2002-2003 C.B. Bailey Scholarship recipients for the fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College.
These $1,000 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation.
Stribling, 18, graduated with high honors from Northeast Lauderdale High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He is a freshman in the University Transfer Program and is studying engineering.
Stribling is employed as an office worker at Winn Dixie, and he volunteers to do yard work for the elderly.
Blanks, 18, is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Technology Students of America and the tennis team.
A University Transfer Program student, Jason plans on a career in architecture. He is employed part-time at Mr. Discount Drugs in Collinsville, and he serves as Eucharist minister at his church.
The Kiwanis Club Scholarship recipients for the 2002-2003 fall and spring semesters at Meridian Community College are Dianne N. Hucks, Karla S. Cessna, Jon Tyler Pope and Taherra Denise Battle.
These $500 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation. The Kiwanis Club sponsors a total of eight scholarships each year.
Hucks is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School. She was a member of the West Lauderdale Chorus, a member of the National Honor Society and was a cast member of Meridian Little Theatre's "Annie Get Your Gun."
Hucks is an accounting and business major and aspires to become a tax lawyer.
Cessna is a graduate of Meridian High School where she received the Presidential Excellence Award, Senior Social Science Award, Virginia Graham Award and the Principal Honor Medal.
She was a member of the National Honor Society and the marching and symphonic bands. Cessna's career goal is to become a nurse anesthetist.
Pope, the valedictorian at Southeast Lauderdale High School, was a member of the All Scholastic Sports Team for WTOK. She also was a member of the Beta Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Students Against Drunk Driving, and the Math and Science Team.
He is pursuing a career in medicine.
Battle is a graduate of the Pentecostal Christian Academy. A freshman at MCC, Battle works with preschool children in a local day care center. She is pursuing a degree in criminal justice and aspires to become a counselor who works with juvenile delinquents.
