DECATUR After letting double-digit leads slip away in the final minutes of a pair of recent MACJC South Division losses, the East Central Community College Warriors were determined not to let it happen again Monday night as they held off Hinds for a 92-88 victory.
ECCC improved to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the division.
The Warriors led by 11 at 30-19 with 10:54 to go in the first half following a 3-pointer each from Jamaal Martin and Demario Qualls.
Hinds rallied to pull even at 41-41 on a basket by Mario Tyler with 28 seconds left in the first half. Dewayne Hughes beat the horn with a basket to give ECCC a 43-41 lead at the break with Corey Hornsby having 13 points and Qualls nine.
The Warriors stretched back out to a 10-point lead at 63-53 with 12:28 to go following a 6-0 run.
The Bulldogs got a pair of treys from Devine Gary as they closed to within 69-67 with 6:58 left.
Martin hit a trey and then converted a three-point play to give the Warriors a 75-67 lead with 6:03 remaining.
A layup by Donald Jones with 3:28 left knotted the battle at 78-78. Martin responded with a 3-pointer on ECCC's next possession and the Warriors made 11-of-15 free throws over the final 1:51 to claim the win. Donzel Crenshaw was 5-of-6 at the line during that span, while Hornsby was 4-of-6.
Not even a pair of treys from near 35-foot range by Gary in the last 14 seconds could reverse ECCC's fortune.
Southwest hosted Pearl River on Monday.
ECCC got 26 points from Hornsby, 14 from Desmond Jones, 13 from Martin, 12 from Qualls, nine from Brandon Mason, eight from Crenshaw, and six from Kevin Bobbitt.
Hinds (7-11, 3-6) got 20 points apiece from Tyler and Denauldo Bennett and 15 each from Gary and Jones.
ECCC women 72
Hinds 47
The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 44-25 halftime lead in crushing Hinds. ECCC led by as many as 32 points in the second half.
Tamekia Foley led ECCC with a game-high 24 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Monique Overstreet added 14 with a dozen coming on 3-pointers. Ebone'e Leverette had 10, Kimyatta Viverette seven, and Lenore Gray and Britney Burks six each.
ECCC improved to 12-7 overall and 6-3 in the division, while Hinds slumped to 3-17 and 0-9.
ECCC hosts Meridian and Copiah-Lincoln next week.
Kristy Sanders scored 14 points and Shawanna Coleman had 13 for Hinds.
