RHS softball goes 2-3 in I-65 Showdown

The Russellville softball team went 4-4 during a week of games that included the I-65 Showdown in Athens.

RHS went to Hatton High School on April 20 and fell to the Lady Hornets, 8-5. Russellville had eight hits and Khristyan Huerta led the team with two. Russellville’s RBIs were by Sadie Odom, Chloe James and Kaylee Suggs.

Taitum Bishop pitched five innings and Suggs pitched one for RHS.

Russellville then hosted West Point the following afternoon and the Lady Tigers got a 5-1 area win over the Lady Warriors. Bishop and Suggs combined to hold WPHS to only one hit with Bishop pitching six innings and Suggs pitching one.

Alexia Groce hit a home run for RHS and had two RBIs. Huerta added two hits, including a triple, and James collected a double and had one RBI.

On April 23, the Lady Tigers hosted and defeated Florence, 12-2. Groce added another home run and also singled while driving in three runs. Ticelee Gholston and Bishop had three hits each. Bri McCulloch, Blevyn Sappington and Bishop had two RBIs each.

Suggs was the Russellville pitcher. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out five during the five-inning contest.

The Lady Tigers then traveled to Athens for the I-65 Showdown on April 24-25. RHS opened the event with a 5-3 loss to the James Clemens Jets. The Lady Tigers then fell to Wilson High School 5-4 before ending the night with an 11-4 victory over the Pelham Panthers.

Versus Pelham, Ghoston hit a home run and also had a single. Suggs added two hits and had two RBIs.

Bishop got the win in the circle and Jonalyn Thorn also pitched for RHS.

On Saturday, Russellville (24-23-1) got a 2-1 win over Danville that was followed by a 5-3 loss to Winfield.
