Bond denied for Betts
RUSSELLVILLE — A 23-year-old man who is facing an attempted murder charge will stay in the Franklin County Jail until his preliminary hearing on Aug. 31.
Nyjel Betts allegedly got into an argument with a 62-year-old man he was living with at the time and shot him in the chest Friday night on the 500 block of Carroll Avenue Southeast, according to a Russellville Police affidavit.
The 62-year-old was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital for treatment and released on Saturday, Police Chief Chris Hargett said.
District Court Judge James K. Sumerel denied Betts a chance to bond out of jail, according to court documents.
Betts had been arrested on Feb. 8 and charged with shooting into an occupied building and second-degree assault. He allegedly shot into a residence on the 300 block of Franklin Street using a .45 caliber handgun.
Betts was booked into the Franklin County Jail and released on a $40,000 bond on Feb. 10, according to court records.
