Red Bay beats Covenant Christian in subregionals

The Red Bay Tigers are heading to the Northwest Regional Tournament at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville after a 42-29 victory over Covenant Christian.

The Tigers were scheduled to face Tanner on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Red Bay jumped out to an early 13-7 lead against Covenant Christian in the first quarter and extended its advantage to 25-13 by halftime. Covenant Christian tried to claw its way back into the game, outscoring Red Bay 9-5 in the third quarter. However, the Tigers responded in the final period, outscoring Covenant Christian 12-7 to secure the win.

Brayden Tabbs led the charge for Red Bay with 16 points, including seven in the crucial fourth quarter. Tabbs was clutch down the stretch, going five-for-six from the free-throw line. Khalil Luster also scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Jaxson Vinson added 7 points, while Jeremiah Robinson and Bryant Harris each contributed 3. Conner Humphries rounded out the scoring for the Tigers with 2 points.

Area tournament

The Red Bay Tigers won the Class 2A Area 10 tournament beating the Sulligent Blue Devils 47-40 in an uneven performance.

When the Tigers’ offense isn’t clicking, the defensive-mindset head coach John Torisky has instilled in his team kicks in. This was one of those nights.

Outside of a pair of 17-point performances from Khalil Luster and Jaxson Vinson, the offense was minimal.

Red Bay trailed Sulligent by a point after one quarter, 7-6 but outscored the Blue Devils 16-10 in the second quarter to take a 22-17 lead at halftime. The Tigers’ second quarter run was spurred by a pair of three-pointers by Luster and Jeremiah Robinson.

Red Bay continued its run in the third quarter outpacing Sulligent 17-11. Vinson scored eight of his 17 points in the third period of play. The Tigers held off a run by the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter to get the championship.

Other Tigers that landed in the scoring column were Brayden Tabbs with 5 points, Robinson with 4 points, Conner Humphries with 2 points and Bryant Harris with 2 points.

The Tigers were also Area 10 regular season champions and Franklin County tournament champions as well.
