Taking a look at fall sport region play

AHSAA Dead Week was last week. This week, high school teams all around the state will begin preparations for the upcoming fall sports seasons. As we move closer to the start of the season, we will take a look at football schedules for each team.

This week, we will review the regions/areas each school will be competing in for football and volleyball.

In football, Phil Campbell will be in the toughest region in the area, Class 3A Region 8. That region features powerhouse private school Mars Hill and perennial football powers Colbert County and Lauderdale County. The Bobcats will also have to face Colbert Heights, Clements and Elkmont.

The next toughest region appears to be Class 2A Region 8. This is Red Bay and Tharptown’s region. The Tigers and Wildcats have to play each other, plus Hatton, Tanner, Lexington, Sheffield, Falkville and Lindsey Lane.

Class 5A Region 8 and Class 1A Region 8 look to be easier regions. In Class 1A, Vina will have to face Addison, Cherokee, Hackleburg, Meek, Phillips, Shoals Christian and Waterloo.

In Class 5A, Russellville has had a fairly easy path to the playoffs facing Brewer, Ardmore, East Limestone, Fairview, Lawrence County and West Point.

In volleyball, the top area appears to be Class 2A Area 15, where Tharptown will have to face volleyball powers Hatton, as well as very good Mars Hill and Lexington teams, along with Sheffield.

In Class 5A Area 15, Russellville has to face volleyball power Lawrence County along with Brewer and West Point.

In Class 3A Area 15, Phil Campbell will have to face Colbert Heights and Colbert County.

In Class 2A Area 11, Red Bay will have to face Lamar County, Sulligent and Winston County.

In Class 1A Area 15, Belgreen will face Hackleburg and Phillips.
