Vina win seals 1,000th point for one player

Kaitlyn Athey recorded a milestone 1,000th career point in the Lady Red Devils’ 51-44 area win over the Phillips Bears this past week.

Athey, who led the Red Devil girls with 19 points, hit the milestone mark when she scored her 10th point of the game. She went 10-for-13 from the freethrow line.

Vina led Phillips 12-10 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 21-16 at halftime. The Red Devils maintained their lead at the end of the third quarter, 31-28.

Mikala Mitchell followed Athey with nine points. Kaley Attaway added seven points and 14 rebounds. Sara Harper and Khylee Brooks scored six points each. Kenzie Elrond finished with four points and six steals.

Vina lost an area game this past week to Hackleburg 55-45.

Harper led Vina with 14 points and six assists. Brooks added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Attaway finished with seven points, Mitchell six points, Athey four points and Elrod four points.
