ACS event promotes education, supports survivors

As October begins as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Cancer Society is working hard to plan events to educate the community.

This month’s events kick off Saturday with Franklin County’s first Tablescape for a Cure at North Highlands Church of Christ from 10 a.m. until noon.

Individuals or groups can purchase tables to decorate for the event. Speakers for the event will include a local cancer survivor and an oncologist to inform guests about warning signs and treatment options for cancer.

“It is just going to be a fun informational day,” said American Cancer Society senior community development manager Anna Duncan.

The event will also include a cancer survivor fashion show, with outfits provided by local boutiques.

”We just want our cancer survivors to feel empowered,” Duncan said. “They are so strong, so we just want to showcase that.”

Duncan said although the focus in October is typically on breast cancer awareness, the American Cancer Society is taking this opportunity to educate about all female cancers.

This is the first year the local chapter of the American Cancer Society is hosting Tablescape for a Cure. Duncan said the local chapter saw other chapters hosting the event and decided to host one because of its great reception in other areas.

“I think a lot of people just liked it because it was different, especially the cancer survivors,” Duncan said. “The fashion show is something that is different and received a lot of support.”

The American Cancer Society is also hosting a Lunch and Learn with the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Oct. 28, and there will be another event in October about which the American Cancer Society will release details in the near future.

The last day to purchase tickets for Tablescape for a Cure is Oct. 3. Individual tickets are $25, and a table of eight is $200. Brunch will be served, and all in attendance will receive a swag bag.
