Abby Davis signs with UAH

Phil Campbell’s Abby Davis made it official last week, signing a basketball scholarship with the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Davis, a 5-foot-11 senior, has been a starter for the Phil Campbell Bobcats since the ninth grade. She has played in three northwest regionals and last year helped lead her team to the Final Four. She was also named second team all-state for her junior season.

“It’s amazing to have this opportunity,” said Davis. “I worked for this a long time, and it’s like all my dreams are coming true.”

Davis was selected this summer to play in the Alabama North-South All-Star game in Montgomery, which is a collection of the best rising seniors in the state of Alabama. Davis played several minutes and scored four points, but her defensive effort was what stood out in a game that featured the kind of competition she will see at UAH.

Davis said Charger coach Andrea Lemmond was really impressed with her versatility.

“Coach Lemmond liked how I was comfortable with my back to the goal and that I can play the guard position too,” said Davis. “I think I really fit with their program, and I am looking forward to it.”

Davis said there are some things she needs to improve on, mainly ball handling and shooting. “I love being in the gym and practicing basketball. You can always find room for improvement,” explained Davis.

Phil Campbell coach Craig Thomas said UAH is getting a great player who will always be dependable.

“Abby will great for their program,” said Thomas. “She has a great work ethic. She works hard and has a great attitude and love for basketball.”

Davis has 1,379 career points, 1,577 rebounds, 146 assists, 198 steals and 134 blocked shots.

Davis said she wants to pursue a career as a veterinarian and get her doctorate degree.
