County boys teams play holiday hoops

Red Bay 59, Wilson 49

The Red Bay Tigers defeated the Wilson Warrior 59-49 in the Bracy Invitational Tournament at Deshler High School last week.

The Tigers led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-19 at halftime. Red Bay pulled away from Wilson in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 19-11 to take a 41-30 lead in the final period.

Gath Weatherford led Red Bay with 17 points. Peyton Green followed with 13 points and Braden Ray with 10 points. Clay Allison finished the game with eight points, Colton Corum with seven points and Noah Brewer with four points.

Tharptown 57, Lynn 47

The Tharptown Wildcats scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to blow past the Lynn Bears in the Tharptown Invitational last week, 57-47.

Seniors Cole Daniel and Levi McCormack scored 32 of the Wildcats’ 57 points in the win.

Lynn led Tharptown 20-16 at the end of the first quarter. The scoring pace slowed significantly in the next two quarters, as Lynn extended that lead to 29-24. Tharptown cut into the Bears’ lead in the third quarter by one point, giving Lynn a 38-34 advantage going into the final period. Tharptown outscored Lynn 23-9 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

“I was proud of the way our guys kept fighting,” said Tharptown coach Shannon Benford. “We have to play smart, take high percentage shots and play good defense. We aren’t going to score a lot of points so we have to keep other teams from scoring points too. That means being smart with the basketball and playing solid defense.”

Daniel led Tharptown with 18 points. McCormack followed with 14 points.

Misael Saldana scored nine points, Aaron Creasy six points, Edward Lopez five points, Carson Petree three points and Winston Nolen two points.

Elkmont 47, Tharptown 36

The Tharptown Wildcats led Elkmont at the half but hit a second half scoring slump, falling 47-36 in the Tharptown Invitational last week.

Elkmont led Tharptown 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. Tharptown came back in the second quarter, outscoring Elkmont 15-6 to take a 24-20 halftime lead. Elkmont outscored Tharptown 15-5 in the third quarter and 12-7 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

McCormack led Tharptown with 12 points. Daniel followed with 11 points. Lopez and Saldana scored four points each. Creasy added three points and Nolen two points.

Cullman 81, Belgreen 78

A fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short, as the Belgreen Bulldogs fell 81-78 to the Cullman Bearcats.

Belgreen led Cullman 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bearcats came storming back, outscoring the Bulldogs 26-19 in the second quarter to take a 44-38 halftime lead. Cullman extended their lead to 64-51 in the third quarter. Belgreen outscored Cullman 27-17 in the fourth quarter.

Jacob Mayberry led Belgreen with 23 points. Mason Bragwell and Brant Bragwell followed with 19 points and 18 points respectively. Seth Bragwell added 10 points. Peyton Scott had six points and Jake Taylor two points.

Central 67, Belgreen 55

The Belgreen Bulldogs couldn’t overcome a third quarter scoring slump in a 67-55 loss at the Bracy Invitational last week.

Central led Belgreen 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. Belgreen outscored Central 16-13 in the second quarter to take a one-point halftime lead, 28-27. Central outscored Belgreen 21-8 in the third quarter to take a 48-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Mason Bragwell led Belgreen with 21 points. Eli Hiser followed with 12 points. Brant Bragwell added nine points, Jacob Mayberry four points, Seth Taylor four points, Jake Taylor three points, and Gaven Taylor two points.

B-Varsity Boys Action

Red Bay 32, Belgreen 31

Red Bay edged out Belgreen in B-Varsity boys action at the Bracy Invitational last week 32-31. Red Bay led 15-14 at the end of the first half and 26-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Alex Kennedy led Red Bay with 10 points. Tanner Warhurst led Belgreen with 16 points.

Red Bay 43, Deshler 36

The Red Bay Tigers came from behind to beat the Deshler Tigers 43-36 at the Bracy Invitational last week.

Deshler led Red Bay 18-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Red Bay went on to outscore Deshler in each of the next three quarter to get the win. Red Bay outscored Deshler 8-6 in the second quarter, 15-5 in the third quarter and 11-7 in the fourth quarter.

Tanner Hamilton led Red Bay with 17 points.
