The past two seasons have brought monumental success for the Russellville High School baseball. It takes a team effort to pull off two state titles in a row – and one member of that team was recently honored at the state level for his contributions.

The Russellville City Schools Board of Education announced Assistant Coach Jay Stanley’s recognition as Alabama Assistant Coach of the Year, as named by the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association.

Head Coach Chris Heaps said having Stanley join his coaching staff was the best decision possible, when Heaps came on board. He described Stanley as “perfect for our program.”

“I don’t see him as an assistant coach; I see him more as an assistant head coach,” Heaps said. He added that, with his own experience as an assistant coach, he knows what it feels like to put in the hard work without getting any recognition – even though the recognition isn’t why they do it. “Jay’s not a guy who toots his own horn … His knowledge as a coach is second to none. He does a great job; he’s a great organizer; he’s a great friend; and he has a great relationship with the players.”
