    County baseball, softball results

    Vina softball

    Vina softball picked up three wins over the weekend, defeating Covenant Christian, Cherokee and Tremont, Miss.

    In the game against Covenant Christian, Vina scored six runs in the top of the first on singles by Abby Hester, Kim Stevens, Brooke Brown, Kaitlyn King and a double by Emily Renfrow. The Lady Eagles cam back with five runs in the bottom of the first and tied the game in the second inning at six runs each. Erica Cantrell singled in the third, and Stevens was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice by Ashleigh Thompson and another hit by King scored Cantrell and Stevens. Vina took an 8-6 lead into Covenant’s final at bat. The Red Devils ended the game with an 8-7 win.

    Abby Hester, Emily Renfrow and Kaitlyn King all singled in the top of the first as Vina jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Cherokee. A hit by Hester and a single and double by Erica Cantrell and Annabelle Upton helped Vina push across four more runs in the second inning. Ashleigh Thompson scored in the top of the third and Cherokee scored two in the third and one in the fourth to cut Vina’s lead to 8-3. Cantrell, Hester, King all singled in the fifth and Upton hit the fence for a double as Vina scored five more runs to take a 13 to 3 lead. Cantrell got the win and held the Lady Indians as Vina would win by the ten run rule.

    In the first Inning against Tremont, Abby Hester scored on a hit and Emily Renfrow scored after being hit by a pitch. Vina took a 2-0  lead into the second inning. In the second inning, Kaitlyn King and Ashleigh Thompson scored on hits.  Hester and Sarah Johnson scored on walks as the Lady Red Devils increased their lead to 6-0. Vina went on to score five more runs for a 11-1 lead. King, Johnson, Hester, Thompson and Renfrow all scored in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Hester scored on a double and Renfrow was hit by another pitch and scored to increase Vina’s lead to 13-5.  In the bottom of the sixth, Johnson scored on a walk, Hester singled and moved to second when Renfrow was hit by another pitch. The winning pitcher, Erica Cantrell, knocked in the winning runs as Vina took the 15-5 win.

    AL.com recognized Hester and Renfrow for their performance this week. Hester scored five times on three hits and two walks. She also had 3 RBI’s and two stolen bases. Renfrow was hit three times by pitches tying a AHSAA record in a game. She also scored three times and stole three bases.

    Belgreen defeats Phil Campbell 4-2

    The Belgreen Bulldogs picked up a big win over county rival Phil Campbell this week. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the fourth inning to take break a tie and get the 4-2 win. Allyson Bragwell went 2-for-2 with a double, a single and scored a run. Kaycee Wilson went 1-for-1 with a single. Krista Sikes pitched five innings and left the game with the score tied at two runs each. Mackensie Anglin came in relief of Sikes and picked up the win. Anglin pitched two innings and struck out three.

    Belgreen’s overall record is 7-7 and 3-0 in the area.

    Red Bay defeats Cherokee 11-1

    Troy Borden carried the Red Bay Tigers to an 11-1 victory over Cherokee on Monday with a strong game at the plate and on the mound.  Borden racked up five RBIs on three hits for the Tigers. He doubled in the first and fourth innings and singled in the fifth innings. Borden was solid on the mound for Red Bay. He allowed one earned run over five innings. Borden gave up five hits while walking one and striking out two.

    The Red Bay Tigers beat the Cherokee Indians thanks to 12 hits, including six extra base hits. Red Bay scored four runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Chase Allen, an RBI double by Allen, an RBI single by Nick Thorn, a two-run single by Borden, and a two-run single by Borden.

    Red Bay took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  A double by Borden, scoring Kolby Bragwell started the inning off.

    Red Bay Tigers went up for good in the third, scoring two runs on an RBI double by Bragwell and an RBI single by Colby Knoblock.

    The Red Bay Tigers brought home four runs in the fourth inning, and matched that run total in the fifth. In the fourth, the Tigers scored on an RBI single by Thorn, bringing home Houston McKinney.

    Phil Campbell defeats Sulligent in area matchup

    Phil Campbell defeated Sulligent Monday 10-2 in seven innings. The Bobcats scored two runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Jacob Anthony and an error. Anthony went a perfect 2-2 at the plate for the Bobcats.  Austin Odom picked up the win for Phil Campbell. Odom allowed no earned runs, three hits and five walks while striking out four over seven innings of work.

    Phil Campbell never trailed after scoring one run in the first on an RBI double by Colby Baker. The Bobcats pushed one more run across in the top of the second when walked. Phil Campbell scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. In the fourth, Bobcats scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Wrona, scoring Daniel Smith. The Bobcats posted two runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh. In the fifth, Bobcats scored on an error, scoring Hayden Copeland.
