RBHS SADD gets geared up

One of the most active and popular clubs at Red Bay High School is once again busy seeking members.  SADD – which stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions – is always involved in many different activities and programs, and one thing that makes this program such a success is the hard work the members put into it. This year SADD will have a little extra help with the addition of what is being called Junior SADD.

In the past, SADD has targeted grades 7-12 only, and the primary focus has been at-risk behaviors for this age group. SADD member Daniel Lindsay made an observation and wondered: why not provide programs for students in the lower grades to educate this age group of students before they make the decision to participate in at-risk behaviors or make destructive, life-altering decisions?

“Through communication endeavors with elementary teachers and the elementary principal Johnny Cleveland, it was decided to set up a Junior SADD club for grades K-6,” said SADD sponsor Dr. Kay Hargett. “Age-appropriate programs will be offered to this group of students on topics such as bullying, not talking to strangers, not taking drugs from strangers, etcetera.”

SADD envisions a world in which young people make positive decisions that advance their health and safety. The mission of SADD is to empower young people to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them in their daily lives.
