Tigers crush Blue Devils for region victory

Red Bay’s defense continues to stymie opponents as they defeated the Sulligent Blue Devils 14-0 in a key Class 2A, Region 8 game. The win improves the Tigers’ record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the region.
“The weather forced both teams to adapt to the field conditions,” said Red Bay coach Michael Jackson. Storms rolled through west Alabama prior to game. “Our secondary played the best game of the season, taking care of Sulligent’s very talented skill players. Our defense came up with three big fourth down stops.”
Red Bay got on the board first on a 66-yard touchdown pass by Troy Borden to Reed Holt, the Tigers’ only pass completion of the night. Borden ran the ball into the endzone for a two-point conversion to give the Tigers an early 8-0 advantage.
“That was a big-time play by Troy and Reed,” said Jackson.
Tate Ozbirn added the Tigers’ only other score midway through the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run to give them a 14-0 lead.
Red Bay rushed for 240 yards on the night. They held Sulligent to 191 total yards, including 175 on the ground.
Red Bay will host county rival and region opponent Phil Campbell Friday night.
“We are looking forward to a big region game with Phil Campbell,” said Jackson. “They are a much-improved football team, and we will have to have a great week of practice. We have only played one home game so far. So, we are expecting a big crowd Friday night for this rivalry game.”
