Red Bay sets sights on new sidewalks

A sidewalk project will mean easier walking into downtown from the housing authority in Red Bay.
A Pedestrian Sidewalk Improvement Project is being undertaken by the city through the Transportation Alternative Program, which Mayor David Tiffin said will help to allay what could be a dangerous situation in Red Bay.
“We’re going to start letting out bids for that section of sidewalk, maybe about half a mile, from the housing projects to the Weatherford Library on Main Street,” Tiffin said. Currently, with no sidewalk, people are often walking in the road. Some of those include senior citizens. “That’s not a good situation,” Tiffin said.
The project will cost just shy of $200,000, 20 percent of which will be funded by the city, with the other 80 percent being supplied by grant funds.
Tiffin said the bidding process for the project will open soon. He would like to see work started on the sidewalks before the end of the year, and he said he believes it will take just a couple of months to complete.
