RHS art show showcases students’ works
Russellville High School students in Melissa Grissom’s Art I, Art II and Art III classes had a chance to show off their year’s worth of hard work at the RHS Art Show on Thursday.
Projects ranging from pastels to pottery were all displayed at the RHS Field House for proud parents, fellow classmates, teachers and members of the community to admire.
“In my classes, we learn the elements and principles of art like shape, color and value, and we try to incorporate them into a project,” Grissom said. “We start out with black and whites and move from pencil to charcoal and then on to color where we learn about the color wheel.
“We learn the basics first and then combine what we have learned in the projects.”
Eleventh grade art student Jesse Haynes said he’s learned a lot in the two classes he’s taken from Grissom and said he plans to take a third class his senior year.
“One thing Mrs. Grissom teachers her students is don’t give up and don’t ever say you can’t,” Haynes said. “She’s really a great teacher.”
Grissom said she keep a sign in her classroom that says “I Can’t” so her students will know that giving up is not an option.
“The kids know what I expect and we just take it day by day,” Grissom said. “One of the main benefits of taking an art class is you learn that there is more than one answer or solution to a problem because everyone’s art looks different. They’ll learn skills they can use throughout their life.”
Over 200 pieces of art were displayed at the art show, including three pieces that took home awards at the recent art show at the Kennedy Douglas Center for the Arts in Florence that featured pieces from 14 high schools.
