NW-SCC now offering machine shop classes

Beginning next month, Northwest-Shoals Community College will offer Machine Shop classes on its Phil Campbell campus for the first time.

This comes one year after welding classes began being offered on the Phil Campbell campus for the first time as well.

The new $1.2 million Multi-Skilled Training Center, which will house the Machine Shop Technology program on the Phil Campbell Campus of Northwest-Shoals Community College, will give students the added option of training to enter the workforce in a state-of-the-art 9,465 square-foot facility.

With the exception of the Nursing program (ADN), the Phil Campbell campus has long been known for its core academic curriculum which has prepared its students to transfer to four-year colleges/universities across United States.

According to NW-SCC President, Humphrey Lee, offering technical classes on the Phil Campbell campus is a huge benefit to students and Northwest Alabama.

“Since the beginning of the 2010 summer semester students have also had the option of taking welding classes on the Phil Campbell campus,” Lee said.

“The expansion of our technical programs in Phil Campbell is a tremendous option for many of our potential and current students. This gives us the ability to train and build our skilled workforce right here in Franklin County.”

The two-story building, which will officially open later this spring, is the first building constructed on the Phil Campbell campus since the Lou B. Bevill Center was built in 1995 as the performing arts building. The Multi-Skilled Training Center is comprised of two classrooms, two faculty offices and an equipment/training area for machine shop students.

NW-SCC will hold its summer semester open registration Monday, May 23, with the morning session, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the evening session 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
