PHIL CAMPBELL - Alicia Swinney’s second grade class has had a visitor for the last few weeks.
During the time with the class, the visitor has helped the students learn about Alabama, Franklin County and Phil Campbell.
Their visitor’s name is Flat Stanley, and he was sent to them from a student in Mississippi asking about life and culture in Alabama.
Flat Stanley is a paperboy that is accompanied by a book with information about Mississippi, and Flat Stanley wanted to learn about Alabama so student Aidan Rouse sent him to Phil Campbell Elementary to learn.
While the students have grown quite fond of Flat Stanley, he will soon be moving on to learn more about different places. His next destination is Vough Elementary School in Powder Springs, Ga. A book about Alabama, Franklin County and Phil Campbell, along with the information about Mississippi, will accompany Flat Stanley on his new journey to Georgia.
Sending him in an envelope instead of by conventional travel also sends flat Stanley with a book explaining how he became flat and how his parents save money.
Swinney said the project has generated an excitement among her students, and it has been a very positive experience for her class.
