1869 – J. Frank Duryea, who helped build and operate the first automobile, is born. Duryea also won the first United States automobile race.
1896 – Dow Jones starts reporting a daily stock average index.
1934 – Bruno Hauptmann is indicted for the murder of Charles Lindbergh's son.
1935 – Entertainers Ozzie and Harriet are married.
1944 – "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" debuts on CBS radio.
1945 – President Truman announces plans to share the atomic bomb secrets with Britain and Canada.
MEMORY GAME
The head football coach for the West Virginia University Mountaineers, Rich Rodriguez, believes it is important for his players to know the people associated with his program. Coach Rodriguez put together a book with pictures and names of all those people who come in contact with the athletes. The players at West Virginia are expected to learn the names and faces in the book and are tested regularly on that ability. For the record, there are over 200 people in the coaches pictorial directory.
BATTERED ART
Last April in St. Augustine, Florida, artist Andrea Giovanni opened an exhibit of her work to benefit The Betty Griffin House, a local shelter for battered women. Eight days later Giovanni was arrested for allegedly beating up her boyfriend then trying to hit him with her car.
DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO
Architect Paolo Soleri has been featured in many magazines for his interest in ecology. He is very outspoken on the need for people to form small communities and live in small homes to save the environment. Soleri wants you to downsize your living space. By the way, he lives in a big house on a five-acre ranch near Scottsdale, Arizona.
SAY I DO, OR I'LL SHOOT
Police in Nevada City, California, went to the home of ex-felon Betty Lynn Warren and arrested her for shooting her boyfriend. Warren knew the incident might land her in jail since ex-felons are not allowed to possess a gun, but she was just ticked off after waiting 18 years for her fellow to propose to her. On the way to the police station, Warren asked one of the deputies why no one wants to marry her then asked the deputy if he would propose to her.

… Police in Cleveland, Ohio, were on the lookout for a man who had robbed the Charter One Bank earlier in the day. It did not take long for them to find him. Some citizens saw Stephen C. Jackson putting red-dye-stained one dollar bills in a coin changer at a washateria and alerted authorities. When Jackson was arrested, he had over 1,800 quarters in his pockets.
… Andre Low was quickly arrested after trying to deposit two forged checks into his account at a bank in Queens, New York. The bank teller became suspicious because one check was for $5 billion and the other was for $6 billion.
… Robert Graham of Honolulu, Hawaii, had served 7 years and 7 months of an eight year prison sentence. With just five months to go, he walked away from a work furlough program to marry his sweetheart. The honeymoon never happened. Graham used his prison identification in trying to secure his marriage license and was arrested before leaving the courthouse.
… A man in Berlin, Germany, decided he wanted to make some money selling marijuana. He crashed a large party and started networking, telling people he had lots of good stuff and to see him if they wanted to get high. He couldn't figure out how he was so quickly discovered by police until he was told that the party he decided to crash was a birthday party for a local cop, attended mostly by police officers.
