LAUREL Colby Reeves was about as good as he could be here Tuesday evening at Walters-Lions Field.
The 13-year-old Laurel-Jones County right-hander gave up a leadoff single in
the first inning, but allowed nothing after that, to lead the host team to a
4-0 victory over Philadelphia in the championship game of the Dixie Boys
Junior District Tournament.
hit a fastball," Bergin said. "But, the team played well all week. I'm proud of them."
L-JC will now advance to the State Tournament, beginning July 17 at Kamper
Park in Hattiesburg.
Reeves, who finished with an 11-strikeout, one-hitter, was almost matched
pitch-for-pitch by Philadelphia's Donnie Tabb, who struck out 10 and gave up just three hits in a complete-game performance.
But, L-JC managed to break through against Tabb in the bottom of the fifth.
L-JC's Brett Johnson walked and stole second. Tyler Fall's sacrifice bunt
was misplayed, placing runners on first and third. Johnson then scored the
game's first run on a wild pitch. Catfish Gainey's fielder's choice ground
out drove in Fall to make it 2-0. With two outs in the inning, Scott Rowland
singled and scored on Brett Bailey's RBI single to center.
The hosts closed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth.
Michael Fox was hit by a pitch, stole second, was balked to third and came
home on Reeves' fielder's choice grounder.
couldn't bunt on him. But, we were able to keep pressure on him. Our
left-handed batters (Garrett Moore, Johnson and Gainey) put the ball in play
against him."
Moore, Rowland and Bailey all singled for L-JC. Marquis Davis had Philadelphia's only hit.
14-year-olds
The Laurel-Jones County 14-year-olds will go for the District Tournament
title Thursday at Walters-Lions Field.
L-JC hosts Philadelphia at 5 p.m. If Philadelphia wins, another championship
game would follow at 7:30 p.m.
The District Tournament winner advances to the State Tournament, beginning July 17 in Kosciusko.
