First day sees good scores

The bowling competition of the State Games of Mississippi kicked off on Saturday with good participation as well as good scores.
Bowlers were able to bowl in one of three shifts on Saturday and according to event commissioner Bernard Hoy the event is going well so far.
The event will close out with two shifts running today. The first shift will be at noon and the second shift will start at 2 p.m., with the medal presentation to follow.
Chuck Gray leads the men's Division 5 (181 &up average) after the first day with a 1318 series. Stan Bottorff holds down second in the division with a 1294 while M.A. Copeland is in third with a 1280.
Gene Derusha leads the Division 4 (161-180) with a 1035 series. Clyde Clay is in second after bowling a 945.
Kerry Lowe leads Division 3 (141-160) with a 1108. Billy Smith bowled a 1037 for second while Ralph James and Jeff Pierce are tied at third with a 929 series.
No bowlers competed in Division 2 (121-140) or Division 1 (120 &below) on the first day of action.
The women also fared well. Pat James led the Division 4 bowlers with an 1120 series. Lou Timms bowled a 1072 for second after the first day and Mary Copeland is in third after bowling a 1038.
In Division 3, Betty Aycock bowled a 993 to take the lead. Polly Smith holds down second with a 981 and Pam McCarty is in third with a 950 series.
Mary Edmonds bowled an 823 in Division 2 to take the lead. Lisa Sessions is in second after bowling an 812.
No bowlers competed in Division 1 or Division 5 for the women.
The youth bowlers also got into the action. James Perniciaro bowled a 720 to take the lead in Division 1 (161 &up). Dustin Gray is in second with a 658 while Josh Coleman holds down third with a 645 series.
Colton Dooley is in the lead of Division 3 (141-160) with a 577 series.
In Division 2 (101-120), Alex Derusha bowled a 598 to take the lead. Matt Atwood is second with a 575 and Chase Dooley rounds out the top three with a 506.
Albert Edmonds leads Division 1 (100 &below) with a 456. Phillip Smith is in second with a 361.
No bowlers have competed Division 4 (141-160) for the youth.
