WL, Lamar set to play soccer match

For the first time in the East Mississippi/West Alabama area, a public school will play an independent school in head-to-head competition.
West Lauderdale and Lamar School will meet in a boys soccer match at noon Saturday at the Northeast Lauderdale Soccer Complex. Both teams were needing to add a game to their schedules, so they worked out a deal over the holidays to play each other.
West Lauderdale comes into the match at 8-4, while Lamar is 4-0.

Hoops dates finalized
The game dates and playing sites between Heidelberg High School and Philadelphia High School have been finalized at least for now.
The two schools will play at Heidelberg High School on Jan. 14 and then tangle at Philadelphia on Feb. 2.

That Forrest was on fire
Louisville High School sophomore sensation Dee Forrest had a big three days in the Nanih Waiya Girls Christmas Tournament last week.
She scored 105 points in three games including 45 in a 53-37 win over Nanih Waiya as the Lady Wildcats won the tournament by winning three games.

Mississippi wins challenge
Mississippi's five girls' basketball teams went 13-2 in the Mississippi-Alabama Challenge at Birmingham, Ala., last week.
In first-round games, West Lauderdale knocked off Vestavia Hills 66-59, Neshoba Central whacked McAdory 73-45, Northeast Lauderdale hammered Thompson 70-34, Columbus spanked defending Class 6A state champion Hoover 43-30, and Ocean Springs ripped host John Carroll 50-21. Vestavia Hills was ranked No. 9 in Class 6A, while Hoover was No. 10 in 6A.
In the second round, West Lauderdale routed John Carroll 75-23, Northeast belted McAdory 73-43, and Columbus drilled Thompson 73-28, while Neshoba Central lost 54-48 to Hoover and Ocean Springs fell 46-31 to Vestavia Hills. The three wins in the second day gave Mississippi the series with an insurmountable 8-2 advantage heading into the final day.
In Saturday's final round, Northeast Lauderdale beat John Carroll, Neshoba Central beat Thompson, West Lauderdale defeated Hoover 45-39, Ocean Springs got past McAdory 42-39, and Columbus bested Vestavia Hills 45-35. Northeast and West both went 3-0, while Neshoba was 2-1.

Lady Warriors go on warpath
The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors went 2-0 in a pair of basketball games with Native American schools at Cherokee, N.C., last weekend to up their record to 14-1.
On Friday, the Lady Warriors beat Hiwassee Dam, 103-37. On Saturday, Walter Wilson's crew clobbered host Cherokee 88-57.
The Warriors weren't as fortunate as they lost both of their games in tight battles. Hiwassee Dam posted a 64-60 win over Scott Thomas' boys on Friday. The host Cherokee squad then slipped past the Warriors 59-58 Saturday. The three-school tournament opened on Thursday with the Cherokee girls belting Hiwassee Dam 81-45. The Cherokee boys made it a sweep as they knocked off Hiwassee Dam 70-57.

The absolute best no longer determined on the floor
The Mississippi High School Activities Association held an Overall State Championship from 1951 through 1982. The winners of each of the state's classes would come back the week after their respective state tournaments and play for the overall title.
During that time span the classifications were AA, A, BB and B, with AA being the largest and B being the smallest.
Harrison Central (AA) beat Mendenhall (A), 40-39 to take the 1982 boys title, while the Harrison Central Red Rebelettes edged Lafayette (A), 48-45 for the girls crown.
It was not always the biggest schools that won, although they did hold an edge, especially in the latter stages of the event.
Duck Hill (B) won the 1979 title and it beat the Class BB school (Scott Central), 74-70 in overtime to do it.
Class B Ingomar won the 1978 boys championship with a 66-62 win over Class BB Utica.
