Basketball season underway for Russellville girls teams

Basketball season is underway for the Russellville girls teams.

The RHS varsity team led by head coach Jermaine Groce opened the season Nov. 9 at the Belmont Lady Cardinal Invitational. The Golden Tigers fell to Columbus (Miss.) High School by a final score of 60-36.

Russellville trailed 31-16 at the half and 48-32 after three quarters of the contest. Angeleah Smith led RHS with 10 points and Alexia Groce followed with seven. Hayleigh Chaney and Laila Hill added five points each, Jemma Moore had four, Bella Malone scored three and Sadie Odom had two points.

The Russellville Middle School girls led by head coach Angela Woods have already played a handful of games this season.

RMS fell to East Lawrence, West Point and Phil Campbell to start the season before picking up a win over Lamar County by a score of 35-14. Russellville then defeated Red Bay Oct. 29 by a 34-28 score.

On Nov. 4, Russellville defeated the Red Bay Tigers again. RMS took the win this time by a final score of 42-27. RMS had a 23-9 lead at the half and held a 36-23 advantage after three quarters. Samantha Wilson led RMS with 16 points and Aleya Lane also scored in double figures with 10. Callie Odom added nine points, Collins Odom had five and Jonalyn Thorn had two points.

RMS fell to 3-4 on the season with a 36-27 loss to Moulton Middle School Nov. 7. Moulton led 14-11 at the half and took a 31-16 lead into the fourth quarter. Samantha Wilson led Russellville Middle School with 11 points. Collins Odom and Aleya Kane had seven points each and Navaeh Davis scored two.
